Cows, sheep, goats and marmots at the mountain station Rinderhütte

_JOS2288

In summer a lot of different animals are living at Torrent. The farmers of the valley bring the animals on different Alps where they can graze in total freedom. At the mountain station Rinderhütte you can see several cows, for example Eringer cows or brown cattle, also sheep and goats. Below the mountain station you can observe at close quarters marmots, which live there in their caves.

Learn more about the marmots:
Marmots live above the tree line and can be up to 15 years old. Their fur is usually brown, they are about 60cm tall and have a long tail of 10-25cm. They build extensive tunnel systems with flight tubes and seperate permanent building, the caves are 10 to 70 meters long. Marmots live in colonies and after a gestation period of 30 days, they give birth to 2-5 cubs. Their diet consists of grasses, herbs and sometimes fruits/seeds or insects. Once the food in autumn do not supplies enough energy, they live on their eroded fat reserves, eroded over the summer, and fall into hibernation. This happens mostly with the first cold wave/snowfall. The waking up is controlled by outside temperatures in spring.

Learn more about the cows:
The Eringer cow belongs to the smallest cattle breed in Europe; they have a dark red to black-brown fur. The anmials are heavily muscled and have strong horns. Their weight is 550 to 600kg; their milk output is about 3200kg per year. They are getting milked only for a short time to save their strength for the fights. In spring Eringer cows are fighting in five different weight classes, they are considered as animals with a very high potential for aggression. The fights are a tourist magnet.

Learn more about the sheep/goats:
At Torrent you can find a lot of different types of sheep and goats. Shepp usually have horns and a white or brown fur. Goats have also horns, but their skin is rather in browns or grays. Sheep and goats are herbivores, whereby goats are eating more herbs. For the foraging, shepp are on the way at the day and they reach an age of 10-12 years. Goats are crepuscular, they rather applies in the early monring or late afternoon for foraging. Regarding their age they are similar. Both, goats and sheep seem to be one of the oldest pets of the world.
